Understanding course levels

Level key:

Level 1 – no sewing experience necessary or in need of refreshering

Level 2 – having basic sewing experience (being able to sew in a straight line)

Level 3 –Intermediate sewing skills (for example, have experience of sewing a basic dress or blouse)

Level 4 – Advanced sewing skills (for example, having experience of sewing a pair of trousers)

Level 5 – experienced achieving professional looking garments and achieving a perfect fit


Introduction to Dressmaking

Intensive one day Saturday or 2 evening workshop



This intensive workshop briefly covers sewing machine basics, pattern cutting, sewing techniques and dressmaking. This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners and no sewing skills are necessary. It is a good foundation for further study on one of our other courses. You will be taught how to use a sewing machine, draft a skirt pattern and then construct the skirt toile to check for fit.   

This course will teach you how to:

        Set up a sewing machine

        Recognise the different parts of the machine

        Choose and insert the correct needle

        Thread the machine

        Wind the bobbin and set it in the machine

        Sew and finish seams

        Construct darts

        Insert a zip

        Take measurements

        Draft a simple tailored skirt block

Things to bring: Shears/fabric scissors, tape measure, box of pins (not the ones on the round disc), fine pencil, rubber, calculator, tracing wheel, paper scissors and a seam ripper.

All courses take place at Unit K103, The Biscuit Factory, Tower Bridge Business Complex, 100 Clements Road, London, SE16 4DG unless otherwise stated. The nearest tube station is Bermondsey on the Jubilee line.

Booking Terms:

All bookings must be paid for in full at time of booking.  If you do not wish to pay online, then you may do so by sending a cheque.  Your place will not be confirmed until the cheque has been received and payment cleared.  Please contact us should you wish to pay by this method.

All fees are non-refundable in the event that you are unable to attend.  You may however be transferred onto another course or to the same course on a different date (subject to places being available). 

Classes are limited to 10 students and at least 3 students are needed to make a class.  In the event of under-subscription, classes may be cancelled or postponed.  We will give you as much notice as possible should this happen and you will be able to  transfer to another course or a receive full refund.  We will not be held liable for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred as a result.
